Steaming around Britain's Railways |

Steam Railway photos, historic Railway buildings and Steam Sound Recordings. Welcome to this collection of photographs of railways in Britain, taken from a library of over 30,000 negatives, dating from the 1960's. The majority are taken on Medium Format Monochrome Film, a medium I still prefer using, as I feel it reflects better the subject matter, although for colour work I now use a D300. To get the best from a "Duchess" takes hard work and skill, to a much lesser extent Monochrome Film is the same. For quite some time I used a 1958 TLR Rollieflex a truly superb camera which would still put many more modern optics to shame, after this was retired I moved onto the classic 501cm which I still use today. The shots are split into four main groups with a few colour examples added here and there. The sound recordings are almost as big a headache as the photographs with over 200 hours of steamy sounds recorded since 1980. Many of the photographs here have a sound clip to match. |

Where do I begin? This is a mammoth task, but hopefully a rewarding one. Rather than collecting dust in a dark corner, the idea is to share these photographs and recordings with anyone interested in the Railways of Britain. The railway photographs within these pages fall loosely into four groups. ![]() |
